Sustainability Policy

ccountability, Trust, Stewardship

My Sustainability Policy: to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs by preserving and protecting ecosystems and natural resources.

With focus on climate change thanks to Greta Thunberg and concerned youth all over this world as well as global leaders that are doing their part, including global efforts, it was important for me to develop my sustainability policy despite all the work I do to do my part.

I continue to do my part in my life and do so as an editor too.

In September 2019, I began contacting big box companies that I have made purchases from to ask them how far they have come with their stated sustainability goals. (I didn’t ask them their beliefs or anything about their ideologies or politics because it’s divisive.) I asked them about their firm commitment to working toward solving problems and what we can do with their products to guarantee they don’t end up in the waste stream. Meeting my commitment means understanding that it can happen when we share innovations and are willing to try them ourselves.

I heard back from several companies, and I was glad to read what they had to say. Others are challenged by industry practices and other policies.

Over the course of my life, I have personally spearheaded several environmentally-conscious efforts. I’m committed to trying to be a part of the solution, in working for myself and in living a balanced life. I owe it to the youth of this world worried about their future and my clients. I have switched to plant-based trash bags. I’d tried different ones, biodegradable bags, in the past, and they disintegrated way too soon, and I will continue to do my part and stay open to innovations.

(Maybe one of you wants to publish a book on mushroom packaging? Why not, right?)

At the very least, I’m willing to continue to ask companies to switch from plastic packaging that is harmful to our environment and can’t be reused. I will think of other ways also to implement my sustainability policy.
